The Shake of Life Captured at Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Maharashtra, this image freezes a moment that lasts no more than a fraction of a second. Having just plunged into a forest pool, the Indian Paradise Flycatcher returned to a slender perch and instinctively shook off the water from its feathers. Anticipating this behaviour, I chose a deliberately slow shutter speed to preserve the energy of the moment—allowing the movement of the bird's elegant ribbon-like tail and the exploding droplets to create a sense of motion rather than freezing every detail. After patiently observing the bird's routine, I waited for it to return to the same perch after bathing. Timing and technique finally aligned as the shutter released at the precise instant the water burst into the air. To me, this photograph is more than an action shot—it is a celebration of the everyday rituals of a wild bird, reminding us that nature's most extraordinary moments are often hidden within its simplest behaviours.

This image captures a Russell's Viper (Daboia russelii) displaying its characteristic defensive coiling and threat display. When threatened, the snake coils tightly into a compact spiral, raises its head, and remains poised to strike while emitting a loud warning hiss. Rather than attacking, this behaviour is primarily a defensive strategy intended to deter potential predators. Russell's Viper inhabits grasslands, scrub forests, agricultural fields, rocky terrain, and open woodlands across the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Its intricate patterning provides exceptional camouflage against leaf litter and earthy landscapes, making it one of nature's most effective ambush predators. The overhead perspective beautifully emphasizes the snake's striking symmetry and natural camouflage, showcasing both its elegance and its remarkable survival adaptations.

They are powerful swimmers and often step into rivers, ponds, and forest lakes to cool themselves during the intense summer heat.
