While aiming to capture the beauty of the golden hour, I found the water turning a warm, reddish-orange color as the sun set. The landscape was bathed in a soft, golden glow, creating a serene atmosphere. In that moment, a painted stork appeared in the shallow water, hunting silently. Its silhouette stood out sharply against the warm-toned water, which reflected the fiery sky above. The stork caught a fish, lifted its head, and swallowed it with its beak open, completing a perfect scene of nature’s raw beauty. This fleeting moment of light, water, and wildlife felt like a peaceful, natural magic—the essence of the Earth’s glowing farewell at sunset.

Vultures are one of the most vulnerable creatures in our country today in ways more than one. Being essential scavengers they are forced to share their food with other scavengers and predators who are opportunistic scavengers as well. In that course of action they often face challenges which are sometimes fatal. Stray dogs stand as one of their most dangerous challengers; they come in pack, they are aggressive, fast and quite brutal to eliminate their competitors. On the other hands the Vultures are huge, but slow-sloppy and they lack agility and therefore often fall victim to other challengers. One such scene of conflict occurred at a Unsanctioned Carcass Dumping Site in Balrampur-Uttar Pradesh where a flock of Vultures were having hard times to encounter a pack of Stray Dogs. The picture speaks about the dominance of the dogs and helplessness of the vultures in these scenarios. At one hand the Vulture population is on the rise, on the other hand they are getting exposed to threats which are indeed multi-dimensional. It's a conflict rising silently. Place - Balrampur Town Outskirts, UP. Clicked on - January, 2023.

DEBARPAN DATTA

Kolkata (West Bengal)

About Photographer
A wildlife researcher turned naturalist, a keen wildlife observer and photographer since my high school days, I, Debarpan, call the forests of Central India my home & wetlands of Eastern India my backyard. With a curious heart of a child, I've spent countless hours observing the stripes and colours in nature over a decade, and I still do. This passion for wildlife got ignited by the classic "Born Free"; since then I've never stopped chasing my dreams. I work as a Wildlife Photography Mentor in different Photography Institutions in West Bengal and On Field Workshops also in association with Nikon India. Either with a camera creating stories in the forests, or sharing the stories with others subsequently, I believe in connecting with people at every opportunity in order to unveil the magic I find in the world of nature.

"Curious Cubs": At just 2 months old, these tiger cubs at Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve gaze out in awe, caution and with wide-eyed curiosity at tourist vehicles, which they are seeing for the first time, not yet taught how to be the king of the jungle yet! This moment to me, is a testament of the magic of discovery and the sense of wonder among animals.

Yashas Chattree

Mumbai (Maharashtra)

About Photographer
I'm Yashas Chattree, an 18 year old Indian wildlife photographer, wildlife conservationist and Medical Student in the UK. Brought up in Mumbai, I’m a wildlife photographer and biology nerd who loves being out in the forest more than anywhere else. I’m drawn to the stories that unfold in the silence of the jungle. Whether it’s a tiger hidden in tall grass, a leopard melting into rock, or a bird pausing mid-flight, I try to capture not just what I see, but how it feels to be there - to capture a story. My work is driven by curiosity, patience, and a love for the natural world, and every image I take is part of my journey to understand wildlife more deeply and share its wonder with others!

Shake a Leg!! Amboli dancing frog (Micrixalus uttaraghati) foot flagging. Male dancing frogs of the Micrixalus genus, found in India's Western Ghats, showcase a unique behavior called foot flagging. They extend their hind legs and wave their webbed feet. The visual display helps attract potential mates in noisy stream habitats. Foot flagging behavior also serves as a visual signal to rival males, establishing dominance and territorial boundaries.

Place & Date: Rongtong, West Bengal (15/08/2025) This spectacular photograph captures a breathtaking moment of devotion between two Great Hornbills, freezing their legendary sky-diving bonding ritual high against a pale sky. The magnificent birds, recognizable by their massive, brightly-colored casques, are locked in a near-vertical, accelerating plunge—a literal descent into eternity. The upper bird is inverted, its powerful black wings intertwined with its partner's, executing a dangerous spiral where their wings are locked, eyes fixed, symbolizing the fierce, absolute trust required for a lifelong, monogamous bond. This ultimate test of fidelity is a dramatic feathered ballet, emphasizing the powerful intimacy and high stakes of their commitment.
