There are certain behavioural traits which we can associate with certain people. The young cub was being annoying, the mom warned a few times. But kids are kids; she tried to test mom's patience and finally the big lady came all guns blazing, with the dreadful mommy face. And the faces say it all; even for a tiger when mom is pissed off it's scary indeed, and the only way to escape is run. Location - Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve.

DEBARPAN DATTA

Kolkata (West Bengal)

About Photographer
A wildlife researcher turned naturalist, a keen wildlife observer and photographer since my high school days, I, Debarpan, call the forests of Central India my home & wetlands of Eastern India my backyard. With a curious heart of a child, I've spent countless hours observing the stripes and colours in nature over a decade, and I still do. This passion for wildlife got ignited by the classic "Born Free"; since then I've never stopped chasing my dreams. I work as a Wildlife Photography Mentor in different Photography Institutions in West Bengal and On Field Workshops also in association with Nikon India. Either with a camera creating stories in the forests, or sharing the stories with others subsequently, I believe in connecting with people at every opportunity in order to unveil the magic I find in the world of nature.

Brettus cingulatus, Brettus is a genus of jumping spiders. Its six described species are found in southern Asia from India to China and Sulawesi, with a single species endemic to Madagascar. At least 2 species, Brettus cingulatus and Brettus adonis, feed on other spiders. Taking advantage of their ability to not adhere to any kind of spider silk, they practise aggressive mimicry and pluck upon the webs of web-building spiders to lure them over to the Brettus at the edge of the web, where they capture/stab their victim. These two spider species also prefer web-building spiders to insects as prey. They are in these regards similar to the other Spartaeinae jumping spiders of genera Portia, Cyrba and Gelotia. Image made at dandeli forest area.

Priyanka Gandhi

About Photographer
It’s always been my dream to be a wildlife photographer. When I was 15 I bought my first camera but I never got the chance to go to a national park. A few years later, I went to my first national park and never looked back ever since. I’m an amateur photographer who is still learning but I’m definitely glad that I’m following my passion and doing what I love!

Picture Details

A peacock sitting in a canopy showing off its feathers. This was a hurried click while exiting the park as we were on a time crunch. While rushing out, I was scanning the surroundings when I saw this peacock sitting all pretty on a raised surface, which as per my guide is a Nandi statue, in the canopy. Couldn't have missed this, so took a couple of hurried shots before rushing out. Canopies are a signature sight of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve and it's a bonus if one gets a subject under these canopies.

The Ghostly Bloom of the Nocturnal Realm Deep within the ancient, rain-drenched forests of the Western Ghats in India, a realm of profound darkness comes alive after dusk. This biodiversity hotspot, teeming with life both grand and microscopic, reveals its most ethereal secrets under the cloak of night, where light plays tricks and hidden worlds emerge from the shadows. The photograph explains a scene that blurs the lines between reality and a fantastical dream. What appears at first glance to be a menacing, giant scorpion is, in fact, an incredible illusion created by light and perspective. The image perfectly captures the essence of this dark, moist, and secretive world. The deep black background emphasizes the profound darkness of the untouched forest night, where every glint of light, every rustle, every microscopic event takes on heightened significance. This is a world far removed from human daylight, a realm of hidden processes and silent growth. The image is a masterful exercise in using light to sculpt and define, creating a dramatic silhouette that appears to be a giant scorpion, while simultaneously highlighting the true stars: the fungi. This photograph is not just a documentation of nature; it is an artistic interpretation, a storytelling piece that reveals the hidden magic and intricate beauty of the forest at night, celebrating the subtle, yet vital, life forms that define the Western Ghats.

Greater Coucal : In Mayureshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, I paused for a brief nature break, unaware that a fleeting moment of wonder awaited me. As I stepped out of the car, a flash of motion caught my eye—a Coucal, clutching a frog, glided silently and perched on a nearby tree. Had I closed the car door, the sound might have startled it into flight. But fortune favoured silence. I reached for my camera with urgency, heart racing, knowing such moments vanish in a blink. I managed a few shots before the bird took off, leaving behind only the echo of wings and the thrill of the encounter.
