During a summer morning safari in Ranthambore, we spotted a mother and her offspring. The surrounding area was filled with cheetal calls, which led us to investigate. To our surprise, the calls were not for a tiger or leopard, but for a delightful trio of sloth bears. First seven to nine months of their lives, sloth bear cubs are carried on their mother's back. This behavior serves two purposes. The first is to shield the cubs from predators like tigers. In fact, there are reports of mother bears fending off tigers while carrying two cubs on her back. Additionally, it is worth noting that other myrmecophagous mammals, such as the giant anteater, also exhibit this behavior of carrying their young on their backs.
