Rufous-necked Hornbill soaring through the air. This picture was taken at the hills in Rongtong, West Bengal. After a long trek downhill; I hear a 'Whoosh, Whoosh, Whoosh' sound right above my head. I had never heard something this loud coming from a bird. I then saw one of the most beautiful and rare Hornbills. It landed on a large branch. I waited for it to take flight again and as soon as it did, I clicked the shutter and managed to get this shot.

Manaska Mukhopadhyay

Durgapur (West Bengal)

About Photographer
A wildlife enthusiast at heart, a disciple of rocks by profession. I received my doctoral degree from Jadavpur University, and after a one-year project at University of Tokyo, I am currently working at IIT Kanpur as a Project Post-doctoral fellow, trying to understand the conversation of rocks under high pressure-temperature, buried far beneath the surface of the Earth. While my brain is looking down under, my heart revolves around Mother Nature, flies with the butterflies, roars with the tigers and chirps with the birds. I am a passionate wildlife photographer, with a special interest on macro, specifically on butterflies. I was involved with many photographic organizations in the past, and currently I am working in the Wiki Loves Butterfly Project, collecting and presenting photographs, information, and knowledge about butterflies for mass awareness and conservation.

Moment before flight :I took this image in the little rann of kutch when I spotted a peregrin falcon in the distant, I sat there till the last rays of the sun hit the earth and thats when it decided to fly off, I was ready with my camera and captured this shot just as it was about to take off with the sunset behind. I captured a peregrine falcon poised on the brink of flight, the golden light of sunset . With the sun sinking low in the sky, the bird’s wings were spread, its gaze focused. In that single photograph, a bird at the height of its readiness, about to spring into action by thrusting it wings downwards. A photograph that is defined as still shows a sense of motion.
