The Golden Breath of Corbett The jungle of Jim Corbett National Park awoke beneath a sky painted in molten gold. As the first rays of sunlight pierced the morning mist, the vast grassland shimmered in burning orange hues, transforming the wilderness into a dream. Through this golden veil walked a mother elephant, her enormous silhouette moving gracefully through the dew-covered grass. Beside her, a tiny calf followed closely, its tiny steps leaving delicate trails in the damp earth. Every few moments, the little one turned towards its mother, seeking comfort in her towering presence. The morning air was cold, and with each deep breath, the mother released a mysterious plume of vapor through her trunk. The smoke melted amidst the short grass as if appearing like an ancient forest spirit, glowing amber in the rising sunlight. For a moment, she stood still, her ears gently fanning the mist, listening to the distant calls of birds and the whispers of her herd who were at the waterbody a short distance away from them. Together, they disappeared into the fiery horizon, two gentle giants embraced by the wilderness. And as the sun climbed higher, Corbett kept their secret—a quiet, golden moment of love, protection, and life in the heart of the wild.

The Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina) is a striking migratory waterfowl species that breeds across Central Asia and Europe, making seasonal journeys to winter in the nutrient-rich freshwater habitats of the Indian subcontinent. Oxbow lakes like Purbasthali in West Bengal act as critical winter refuges, offering calm, shallow waters abundant with aquatic vegetation and algae, which these large diving ducks feed on through both shallow diving and dabbling. Captured at dusk, the image highlights a male—distinguishable by his rich orange-chestnut head, vivid red bill, and contrasting dark breast—set against a shimmering backdrop of warm evening light and soft water reflections that characterize the tranquil habitat of these seasonal visitors.

About Photographer
With a background in Engineering (B.Tech) and an MBA in Sales and Marketing,I began my professional journey in the corporate sphere. Yet the call of the wild, present since childhood remained constant. Growing up captivated by the visual storytelling of wildlife documentaries, I had developed an early fascination for untamed landscapes, rare species, and the quiet power of the natural world. Choosing to step away from a conventional nine to five career, I committed fully to pursuing wildlife photography as a lifelong vocation not merely to document nature, but to interpret it through a fine art lens that honours both its majesty and fragility. My approach is defined by clarity and conviction combining structured thinking with creative depth to capture moments that feel both intentional and alive.

This unforgettable photograph captures Tigress P151 set against the stunning backdrop of the Ken River and the Vindhyachal mountains in Panna National Park. During a morning safari starting from the Madla gate, we initially had a wonderful sighting of her two cubs. Later, as we were heading toward the exit, we passed a cluster of vehicles waiting at Judy Nala for the mother to descend from the mountains. Just after we crossed the stream and bypassed the crowd, we unexpectedly spotted P151 strolling along the track. We stopped to capture this beautiful moment of her walking beside the river, just seconds before she disappeared into the water.

The Dance of Defiance: On a misty January 2026 morning in Mangalajodi, the horizon vanished into a watercolor haze. Suddenly, two Great Egrets erupted into the air, locked in a fierce territorial dispute. Tightening the frame away from the empty sky, the lens captured perfect natural symmetry. On the left, one bird hung with wings swept back and on the right, its rival hovered with primary feathers fully fanned against the fog. It was a frozen fraction of a second, a cinematic slice of raw avian drama and elegant confrontation suspended over the moody marshes, capturing the very soul of the wetlands. One frame. Two worlds. One unforgettable moment. After almost a year, I was back in Bandipur — and on the very first safari in August 2026, the forest gifted me a scene that felt straight out of a wildlife documentary. A leopard resting quietly on the rock while a herd of spotted deer moved through the habitat below. Then came the slow zoom towards the leopard. Suddenly, the entire scene felt different. The predator was calm. The deer were unaware. And between them was that silent, invisible tension that makes the wild so fascinating. The legendary Reception female of Bandipur, watching over her kingdom. ???? I came back hoping for a good sighting, but I never expected the forest to tell me a story like this on the very first safari. Sometimes, you don't need a chase or dramatic action. Just a predator, its prey, and a moment frozen in time.

Ghautham R R

Bengaluru (Karnataka)

About Photographer
I am Gautham, and the wild is where I feel most alive. Armed with patience, instinct, and a camera, I chase light and life across India's most iconic tiger reserves — from the misty mornings of Pench to the dry teak forests of Tadoba. For me, wildlife photography is not just about the perfect frame — it is about earning it. Hours of waiting, reading the forest, trusting the guide's instincts, and surrendering completely to the unpredictability of nature. Every sighting is a story, every shot a memory carved in silence. Whether it is a sub-adult tigress sitting like a monk on a jungle track or a tiger commanding a rock at dawn, I have learned that the jungle rewards stillness above everything else. I do not go into the wild looking for photographs — I go looking for moments, and sometimes, if I am patient enough, the moments find me.

Two of the five sub adults were spotted at the far end of the forest, away from their three remaining siblings. We were told that their mother, F2, had engaged in a territorial fight with her cubs the previous day. It was a clear sign that all five were now searching for new territories and beginning to make their own hunts. At around 16 months old, this separation is considered a little early. 18th Dec. 2025 - Gothangaon Gate Umred-Pouni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.
